Contested Lands: Israel-Palestine, Kashmir, Bosnia, Cyprus, and Sri Lanka: Israel-Palestine, Kashmir, Bosnia, Cyprus and Sri Lanka |
DescriptionThe search for durable peace in lands torn by ethno-national conflict is among the most urgent issues of international politics. Looking closely at five flashpoints of regional crisis, Sumantra Bose asks the question upon which our global future may depend: how can peace be made, and kept, between warring groups with seemingly incompatible claims? Global in scope and implications but local in focus and method, Contested Lands critically examines the recent or current peace processes in Israel-Palestine, Kashmir, Bosnia, Cyprus, and Sri Lanka for an answer... |

Question on Bose–Einstein condensate?
The wikipedia article says "Under such conditions, a large fraction of the bosons occupy the lowest quantum state of the external potential, at which point quantum effects become apparent on a macroscopic scale."
Meaning bosons that dont occupy the lowest quantum state still exhibit quantum effects?
does this means everything is subject to probability distributions? and if so, are these distributions infinitely random (are they truly random)?
If this is the case, does this mean my whole life was based off random events rather than a pure determined universe?
I also understand there are theories about quantum foam, and how everything is curled up into 5-th dimensional planck units (explaning quantum mechanics), can anyone link me to any sites for those who want to learn the theory but dont know the mathematics?
thanks for all efforts.
The wikipedia article is saying all there needs to be said. There is a maximal value of the chemical potential that yields a maximal possible value of the density, often referred to as the critical density that depends on the quantum concentration. In practice, in it possible to continue adding particles or lowering the temperature such that the given density exceeds the critical density. From quantum, we know this will begin to occupy the lowest energy states if we lower the temperature sufficiently low. Now you may want to know what the mean occupancy of the lowest lying states, namely the ground state. By our assumption before that the chemical potential approaches zero for the density to approach a maximal, the mean occupancy tends to infinite. What this means is the ground state can accomodate any number of particles.
It can also be shown that the mean occupancy of other low lying states remains microscopic relative to the ground state, hence why the Bose-Einstein condensate is macroscopic.
EDIT: Also please note that the distribution function for Bosons is NOT a probability distribution in the sense of the canonical distribution (which applies to any system with fixed # of particles and describes the probability of occupation of a particular energy state).
Bosons that don't occupy the lowest energy states *always* exhibit quantum effects, they're bosons! This means their wave functions are symmetric and hence any number of them can occupy single energy states (not limited to low lying energy states). So, I really don't believe anything else you mentioned is valid about "random events" since a Boson distribution describes the mean occupancy of bosons in single particle states and not the probability distribution of occupancy. At least this isn't a consequence of the application of the statistical arguments for Bosons when applied to the Boson-Einstein condensate.
EDIT (again): Actually what I mean when Bosons always exhibit quantum effects, I mean that the mean occupancy is sufficiently high that there is a distinction between quantum and classical physics (just so there isn't any confusion), since when the mean occupancy is sufficiently low, in general, the distinction between fermions and bosons disappears and quantum effects are be ignored.
