Best headphones for plane travel?

Can anyone recommend a good set of headphones for use on a plane as well as at home? I am after good sound quality (mainly for use with Ipod), as well as insulating from noise. In the past, I have had the Ipod at nearly full volume during the plane flight to drown out the noise, but this cannot be good for the ears. I am hoping to get a pair of headphones good enough that I don't have to blast my ears.

I don't want the 'active noise reduction' ones, eg. Bose Quiet Comfort. Either a good earbud type that have good sound quality as well as keeping cabin noise out, or a pair of closed cans that do the same thing.

I am willing to spend up to $300.

Thanks.
The Bose Quiet Comfort phones, although highly recommended, are out of my price range. I am in Australia, and they are $500-$600.

I'm not sure why you don't want the Bose. I always use the over-ear rather than on-ear type (I'm a frequent international traveler), and the sound quality plus noise reduction is incredible. It allows you to keep the volume quite low to avoid ear damage.

That being said, if you want buds, these come highly recommended (note they have the noise-canceling technology, which I'm not sure you want):
