Harmon Kardon or Sony?
I am looking for a different surround sound receiver and I don't have a whole lot of money to work with. I have two Bose towers and two Cerwin Vega RE series with the center channel to power. I am looking at a Harmon Kardon and a Sony and here is the question... Are Sony receivers that list 100 watts per channel going to be louder and sound better then a Harmon Kardon that runs only 55 watts of power per channel. I know when it comes to car audio there is a huge difference in watt (like a 500 watt JL will out power a sony 1000 watt). Thanks in advance.
Of the two HK all the way. The only Sonys worth considering are their ES line ... and even then they aren't the best choice. You should also consider Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer or Yamaha ... all make good receivers ... although to be fair you should consider equivalent price points and choose on the basis of features for the $$.
I'd also consider trading your Bose speakers for something better (almost anything!). Consider such brands as Klipsch, Energy, Tannoy, Distinctive Audio, Mission, Paradigm, Boston, etc, etc ... almost any are better than Bose (and more efficient .. see below).
Re power it may help to consider that power vs loudness is a non-linear function, and doubling power only gives you a 3 dB increase in volume (barely noticeable). The efficiency of speakers is a much more important consideration. Speaker efficiency varies greatly. It is expressed typically as the sound pressure level (in dB) for an input of 1 watt measured at a distance of 1 meter (e.g. 88dB for 1 watt @ I m). The rating can vary from as low as ~80 to over 90, meaning the same 100 dB sound would require amplifiers rated from ~5 watts (92 dB efficiency) to ~80 watts (81 dB efficiency). See the link for more details.
Bottom line, in comparing receivers don't worry about power differences until it's at least double ... a 10-20 watt difference is insignificant (assuming they are rated the same way ... rms watts, NOT music or dynamic power)
