Help me with my home audio setup.?

Ok, as of right now I have two 200watt JBL front speakers and a very very old receiver. I'm looking for a good sub woofer and possibly a new receiver. Now I'm not looking to go all out and get a Bose setup. I just want something decent. I don't know if it is possible but I would love to stay under $400 per item.

My uses for this is mainly blu-ray movies and gaming consoles. I have a 47" HDTV I'll be hooking it up too. So I'm looking for something with a digital/optical/HDMI connection if possible.
When I mentioned Bose...I was mainly referring to the price. Meaning I don't want anything that pricey.

First of all, buying Bose isn't going all out, it's being suckered by BS marketing. Bose products are not superior, they're a ripoff.

The kind of receiver you want depends on whether or not your Blu-ray player is able to decode HD audio. If it can, then any decent receiver with HDMI ability will do. (HD audio requires HDMI and can go to 7.1 while optical limits you to 5.1 and standard definition.) I have been happy with my Onkyo TX-SR606. It's reasonably priced ($300-$350) and has 4 HDMI-in ports. It can even handle the decoding of HD audio if your Blu-ray player can't do it. But once again, HDMI from the BD player (and gaming console) to the receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV.

You're on your own with the speakers. It can be difficult to mix and match different speakers. And ultimately it comes down to personal preference. So I wish you luck with that part. I've been happy with my Polk Audio speakers, but there are so many good sets out there I wouldn't even know where to begin.
