Does Bose QuietComfort 15 not play audio when noise-canceling function is turned off?

I ask because I just bought the Bose QuietComfort 15, and I was under the impression that they would work as normal headphones as well. When the noise-canceling function is turned off, there is also no audio. Is this normal?

100% normal.
You can't use the qc15 without the NC feature turned on.
This also turns on the Bose dsp (digital signal processing) circuitry that gives the sparkling highs: trebble (which is overboosted in my opinion) , and boosted bass , and recessed mids: which makes voices thin and synthetic... But of course, some consumers like this: which is great! To each their own;)

You have about 30days to return it and get something else.
