UPS asking me to file a police report?

I ordered a docking system on line and an in-ear headset, supposedly both the docking system and in-ear headset were elivered at my door but I only got the in-ear headset. I never received the docking system. I called Bose to report the item never received and they reshiped my whole order.

UPS is been investigating and I have been working with them but now they want me to file a police report. Supposedly the docking system was left at my door along with the package containing the in-ear headset. UPS says both packages were delivered on December 18th, but the tracking number says 17th.

Should I be filing a police report or should UPS?
I read that if I file a police report that goes in my public records, is this true?

If it was stolen from your property (your doorstep), then you should file the report.

The reason UPS is asking, by the way, is so that they have some paperwork to use when they file a claim with their insurance. They have to eat the cost of the lost docking system and this is a way for them to recover their damages. You would be doing them a favor by filing the report.

The first poster is incorrect, by the way. You will not need to file a claim on your homeowner's policy. The company is shipping you a free replacement, so you are all set.
