What's an fm modulator?
I'm trying to play my ipod in my 2003 nissan altima. I've tried 3 different FM transmitters and they don't work with my car. The antenna is built into the windshield which is probably why it doesn't work. I want to keep my stock Bose 6 disc changer/deck set up. I've heard of people installing a cable/ input jack from the back of the deck and have the jack peeking out of the glove or some compartment. Has any one had any luck playing ipod in 2003 altima? What's an FM modulator? and will it work with my antenna being in the windwhield?
An FM modulator is similar to the FM devices you've been using, but instead of broadcasting the sound on an FM channel, it sends the FM signal through an antenna cable. This can be connected directly to the car radio through the factory antenna jack. The factory antenna plug gets plugged into the modulator.
When you're not using the iPod, the factory antenna is still connected to the radio through the modulator. When you use the iPod, the modulator converts the sound to FM and feeds it into your radio through the antenna jack, while at the same time cutting off the regular antenna input. The result is a clear sound, with no interference from regular radio stations.
Even though you have an in-glass antenna, it's still connected to the factory radio through a standard coaxial cable. The FM modulator is connected right at the back of the factory radio. You would need a set of antenna adapters, because the Nissan diversity antenna plug is a different type than the universal after-market plug used by the modulator.
