What type of receiver and speakers for a nice stereo/surround system?
I am looking for a nice stereo set. I would use it for surround sound and to listen to rock music. i would like a suggestion on a receiver to get and some floor speakers. I hear that BIC acoustech and klipsch are pretty good and that Bose are not. What else would I need to have a good surround with nice clear treble and bass. Should I get some bookshelf speakers and subwoofer to got along with these? It would not have to be anything that would shake the walls either. I'm looking for the best products for the lowest price.
First, determine your budget. Second, your room dimensions and acoustics. Speakers are very subjective....what sounds good to you? Try to test some out with material you are going to use and are familiar with. If you are going to use surround sound for movies, I think a sub is a must, especially with most bookshelf speakers. I have had a variety of receivers from $500-2500 and you get what you pay for...but...what you are listening to and where you are listening to it have a lot to do with the quality of sound you will hear. I have had Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo, Harmon Kardon and Arcam and like them in reverse order as listed. Although a $2500 Arcam SHOULD sound much better than the $500 Yamaha. I have heard many speakers and like a few, but like I said earlier, this is very subjective. That being said, I still have my old Klipsch Heresy's and will not ever get rid of them as they are the most efficient, clear sounding and reasonable cost wise as I have seen over the years, and I could sell them now for over half of what I paid 25 yrs ago. I also have a set of Paradigms including a sub, which I also like very much. Hsu and Velodyne are impressive as well but better in the higher end of those lines (once again, opinion) I am now using a SVS sub and it will peel the paint off the walls if I let it, very impressive and musically crisp and accurate. SVS is now making a speaker line which I have not heard but would take a look at due to the value I got from their sub. They are a factory direct mfg. so not possible to audition at a store, but have a trial period so that you can listen in your environment. Look into the used market to get better bang for your buck in quality. Many audiophiles are always upgrading and changing to get that elusive magical sound thus putting older gear on the market that sometimes crush what is available for similar money at some of the box stores. Bose lacks in the sound dept., spending money on marketing rather than quality but may work for you...it impresses wives and others who know no better.
