Are Bose audio products overrated and overpriced?
Everything labeled "Bose" is expensive. This includes their headphone, the Wave clock radio, their Lifestyle cube speaker home theatre systems, etc. In your opinion is Bose overrated and priced, say 4 or 5 times higher than it should be? Or do you believe that Bose products are actually worth the money?
Overrated by who? Certainly not by professionals or anyone knowledgeable about sound. Among those that know Bose is a joke. Unfortunately, advertising works and many gullible people think Bose makes good stuff.
There is a reason no reputable audiophile ever rates Bose highly. Bose spend a fortune on marketing (one figure I saw claimed 40% of total income) to affluent and gullible folks who don't know anything about sound. Too bad they don't put more into R&D! Bose make overpriced, (at best) mediocre equipment.
The big problem is they don't have any midrange and the demos are misleading in that the sound is HIGHLY equalized to make it sound as good as possible (note how Bose equipment is never set up with other equipment so you can compare) ... but you won't get that with real material at home. In general Bose use low quality components (paper speaker cones!) and use proprietary connections.
I don't know that they are 4-5x the price they should be, but I'm sure anyone can get equal performance for half the price (and with some effort possibly for 1/3 the price). Or, put another way, for the price of any Bose equipment you can get much better performance from other manufacturers.
