Bose aviation A20 headset?

Do you use the bose a20 headset when you fly?

How is the noise cancellation, battery life, function, etc. Pros and cons?

I'm looking to buy my first headset. Suggestions of other brands would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have used both the Bose A20 and Bose Aviation X; the Aviation X is the model that was produced by Bose before the A20 model came out last year. A lot of people say that the A20 has better noise cancellation; but honestly, the A20 and Aviation X are very comparable. The main benefit to the Bose A20 is that it has some added features that the Aviation X model did not have; they include the Bluetooth and "Aux Audio In." The model with Bluetooth cost about $100 more. Bluetooth and Aux Audio In features enable you to talk on your Bluetooth-enabled cellular telephone and listen to an MP3 or portable GPS, respectively.

PROS:

- The Best Noise Cancellation/Hearing Protection
- Most Comfortable
- Aux Audio In
- Bluetooth
- Excellent Warranty Service
- TSO Approved

CONS:

- Expensive
- Requires AA Batteries (I usually replace the batteries after about five hours of usage... as noise reduction quality begins to deteriorate after that period).
- Aux Audio In and Bluetooth features are both unnecessary distractions and have no place in the learning environment of a cockpit.
- Some argue that noise cancellation inhibits the pilot's ability to hear abnormal aircraft engine -- and system -- noise.

I've also flown with the David Clark 13.4's -- which are considered to be the standard in aviation headsets. I must say that when compared to the 13.4's, the Bose A20 and Aviation X are far superior... making it easier to hear radio transmissions and protect your long-term hearing. If you're willing to pay the price ($995.95/$1095.95), then I say it's worth it!

Otherwise, if you're looking to spend much less -- and looking for proven quality -- then I recommend the David Clark 13.4 (~ $300).

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me! And good luck with your flight training!
