is Bose Companion 5 a good pc speakers? why?
what's the difference between the companion 3 and companion 5? is it the best pc speakers around?
The companion 5 speakers are good- yes. Are they the best?- no.
Difference between the companion 3 and 5 : obvious one is the price. Secondly, the 5's have "digital surround sound" to try to give the sense of rear speakers. Also, the 5's have more power-wattage... but because Bose doesn't actually state all specification details, I don't know how much more power. We do know that the 5's have an extra speaker in each satellite.
So to expand a little on whether they are good speakers [If you are interested]: --- They do have decent sound stage, decent pleasing sound [Bose signature sound], and beautiful to look at [as the ergonomics are excellent too]. If you are new to audio: - then this set will suite you very very well and you'd love them! But if you are very picky with your sound... and need something accurate, then you may not be happy in the long run.
So why are they not the best?? -
1. Price is at $499 usd. This is alot of money for any computer speaker system, especially this one - for what you get.
2. The system has Bose's 2" twiddlers... 2 of them in each satellite. Then it has 1..6"[approx] woofer in the sub box. This is less than an ideal setup: No tweeters, no mid woofers. Bose dsp [digital signal processing- in other words Equalizer] forces the 2" twiddlers to do the highs and the mids - they do an ok job... but to the trained ear, they highs are not high enough... and the mids are not perfect - lacking vocal clarity - as the sub box tries to help the mids issue by producing some of the mids - this is ok -as the sub box do a great job of helping - but this means that you can hear voices come from the box... in which case hurts sound imaging and sound staging.
3. Bose uses mainstream, inexpensive building material. 3 areas come to mind: - the satellites have abs plastic enclosures - which is compact, but causes vibration, resonance, and distortion. - then the sub box is made of LDF [low density fiber board - found in your mainstream IKEA furniture - which is easily damaged, cheap, and is less than perfect for acoustic purposes... most if not all other decent speaker manufacturers use MDF [Medium density fiber board - which is stiffer, stronger, arguable better for acoustic purposes] or better for their upper scale products. + all speakers: - look closer into the magnets and paper drivers - this set of speakers are definitely worth the $499 usd.
Options:
I'd buy these speakers and test for the allowed 30day return/refund policy [excellent policy]... and then compare them to the other options out there.
I'd recommend the line of AudioEngine products: www.audioengineusa.com and look at the A5 or A2. -they too have a 30day return policy,,, The A2 is less than half the price... the A5 is closer to the Companion5's but both audioengine products are made up of 2 speakers only... and the A5 is quite large. The A2 is perfect size in my opinion.
Harmon Kardon Soundsticks [also a 2.1 -sytem like the Companion5] are also a good option - at less than half the price.
Also, check out the Focal XS - avail at the Apple store - is also a 2.1 sytem and is about the same price as the Bose set.
