Speaker impedance questions?
I have an old Realistic STA-84 that I use for parties. The reciever is hitched to a pair of 8-ohm Bose 301 speakers on the A output. I would like to put a set of Pioneer TS-A6905 three way speakers on the B output. However, these are only 4-ohm speakers. The reciever is compatible with 2-16 ohms, but only 8-16 ohms if two sets of speakers are used. The reciever is never usually set above 5 on the volume control unless the song is quiet.
Here are my questions:
-Why does a low impedance speaker cause problems?
-Is it o.k. to use this setup if I keep the volume level below 5 and use a desk fan to ventilate the reciever?
-Can you increase the impedance of a speaker with resistors?
If you're receiver is capable of 2 ohms then you will be ok. Your 8 ohm speakers in parallel with your 4 ohm speakers results in 2.66 ohms.
You can add resistors but it isn't as simple as you think. You will be increasing the DC resistance which will change the damping factor of the speaker. This isn't a good idea as it will change the frequency response. Also the speaker itself includes capacitive and inductive reactance in addition to resistance. There should also be inductors and capacitors in the crossover network. A resistor, inductor, and capacitor in series forms a resonate circuit that can create unexpected changes to the total impedance. The wrong change could create a very low impedance at the resonate frequency which could cause problems for your amplifier. I wouldn't suggest attempting to change the impedance of the speaker by adding a resistor.
