Where to plug in subwoofer to my Sony TA-AV521 Receiver?
I have a Sony TA-AV521 Receiver that i use with my speakers. Currently, I have two Bose 161 Speakers plugged into the first 'Front Speaker' ports, and I need to plug my Sony Subwoofer into the receiver to work with the Bose 161's. There is no Subwoofer ports on the back of the receiver, only two sets of left/right front speaker ports, left/right rear speaker ports, and left/right center speaker port. Where should I plug in my Sony Sub? Thanks for the help.
You don't. A couple things first: The Sony TA-AV521is not a receiver. It is an integrated amplifier. From what I can tell it dates to the early '90s. That is a period when subwoofers were not common. Also, from what I can tell there is no subwoofer output. I can only find one or two pictures of the back panel which I can not enlarge and both are a bit blurry. I can not find a free user manual on line and, forgive me, but I'm not about to pay for one to answer this question. If one of those RCA sockets says sometihing like "sub," "low frequency" or "LFE" that's where you will run an RCA patch cord to an active sub. It looks like there are several inputs, CD, Video etc,. and 4 socket RCA array that looks to me like a tape loop. However there is a remote (very remote) possibility that it could be a pre-amp out / power amp in set of connectors. If so you can connect the sub to the pre-amp out. If it is a tape loop you can not, or should I say should not as there will be no volume control. Another point is that you give no model number for the subwoofer, so I can not tell it if it is a passive or active speaker. I suspect the latter and if so the above applies. If it is a passive unit you can connect it to the front, right and left speaker outputs if it has a built in low pass or crossover. If this is the case it will use the power of the integrated amp top drive it and you may have to worry about impedance problems when using it with the Bose speakers. If it has a simple low pass filter this will be the case but if it has an actual crossover with outputs for the full-range speakers you won't have to worry about impedance as the amplifier will only "see" the impedance of the crossover. But,I don't know of any Sony subs of this description unless it is either an older design or it came with an all in one unit (HTIB Home Theater In a Box) and if so it will not have the built in crossover and probably isn't worth using anyway. If it is an active sub it will have a cord to plug it into an AC wall outlet and RCA connectors for the connection to the amp. It may also have speaker level connectors and if so you can use it as described above with the left and right front speaker connectors. If that is the case it will use no power from the integrated amp and will impose no load on it. If it is a passive unit it will have either speaker wire or speaker style connectors.
